New book by Rosan Bosch
Play to Learn – Designing for Uncertainty is a hands-on inspirational guide to creating holistic design solutions that place the learner at the center. With contributions from leading professionals within neuroscience, play, and education, the book aims to inspire the global learning community by offering a future-proof approach to transforming education using applied science and design as a strategic tool for innovation of educational spaces globally.
While the book is a result of Rosan’s 25 years of professional experience within arts, design, and architecture, it presents a range of the studios' visionary projects that showcase the essence of playful learning environments from Beijing to Buenos Aires. Rosan is known for her thought-provoking design solutions that break with traditions and take learning out of the classroom, and the book lists 10 Golden Rules emphasizing the importance of supporting human development in learning situations:
The pandemic has made it very clear that we need to be able to learn anywhere. By placing the learner at the center – not only in the build environment but in all learning situations - learners can unleash their natural born curiosity and achieve 21st century skills that prepare them for an unpredictable future." - Rosan Bosch
Bosch argues that learning through play should be one of the key strategies in learning situations. Learning spaces that offer diversity and flexibility in ways of interacting, sitting, moving, and creating have a strong impact on learners’ self-agency and creative problem-solving skills. The book addresses issues in the development in the global educational system today:
“Rather than stimulating creativity and support individual needs, the spatiality of traditional schools today suppresses and controls both behavior and play. Schools must offer children a safe, trusting and differentiated space where they can grow as human beings, maximize their learning potential, and stay motivated to learn for the rest of their life. “ - Rosan Bosch
Contributions from leading professionals
During the pandemic, Rosan Bosch facilitated a series of virtual conversations, Learning Inspired, with leading experts on learning, play, high performance, collaboration, and neuroscience with the purpose of bringing insights and reflections on how the lockdown of schools affected learning, what we could learn in this situation and bring back to school when they reopened. The inspirational conversations discussed the learning paradigm in uncertain times and presented experiences and perspectives on playful learning. In ‘Play to Learn – Designing for Uncertainty’, some of their methodologies, research and findings are featured.
Bosch creates learning landscapes in both indoor and outdoor settings to empower learners and allow them to take responsibility for their own learning process.
