We Won! Bringing Play and Imagination to BS KA School Zottegem
Our concept for playful learning spaces is part of the winning proposal for campus BS KA school Zottegem in Belgium. With a play street going from indoor to outdoor, a tube slide connecting floors and organic interior shapes, the design creates an imaginative world for the students at kindergarten, primary and secondary school.
The learning spaces are organized around the grand plazas that offer a shared and variated learning environment. Sliding walls provide flexibility to shield off compartments or open up for a dynamic and buzzing learning community.
With 95 out of 100 points the judging panel praised the uniting qualities of the play street in their motivation:
“The architecture is, from an exterior and interior perspective, a well-designed translation of innovative education: Children get motivated in a playful way by following personal paths, getting different experiences, and thereby learning is established in a new way.”
The flexible and play-fueled approach for learning spaces is the first of its kind in the Flemish part of Belgium. Moving away from the traditional classroom structure, the new physical design of Zottegem offers a differentiated learning environment that will set an example for future school development.
For the winning proposal, we collaborated with Alheembouw and B2Ai. The judging panel consisted of members from GO! Onderwijs van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, external architects, teachers and school organization.
