Self-directed learning is thriving in the prototype learning landscapes at the Western Academy of Beijing. We have replaced the school's traditional classrooms with an open community structure that enhance student agency and support project-based learning.
The designs present differentiated and variable spaces that support the school’s FLoW21 targets for team-teaching, flexible learning groups, mentorship and individualized timetables.
Throughout the prototype areas, our design strategy is taking inspiration from the IB program’s Theory of Knowledge. The learning environments are themed by the Areas of Knowledge – like the community for mathematics in middle school and the multidisciplinary library in high school. Within each learning landscapes, ten differentiated spaces enable both students and teachers in the learning community to work with Ways of Knowing and flexible learning activities. Here they encounter customized frameworks for Movement, Construction, Stillness, Sound, Lab, Bio, Theatre, Library, Writing & Drawing and Exhibition & Lounge Courtyard.
In the learning space design, we activate the wealth of Chinese culture in a modern framework for learning. Dragon paths, moon gates and Chinese courtyard structures shape the identity of the new imaginative learning environments for the international students, representing more than 50 nationalities.

High School and Library
Grand courtyard pavilions in red latticework function as meeting spots and workstations with integrated exhibition displays at the high school library. Too often student projects are hidden away in classrooms, so we have designed a display platform for the learning community that also showcase the school's vast collection of Chinese artifacts, historic furniture and graphics.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
The vector room in middle school is equipped with a grid of 50x50 cm tiles that allows the students in the learning community to measure in relation to their body. For the mathematics teachers, it presents an impactful tool to relate movement, body scales and perspective to aid a better understanding of geometry and space.

Throughout the library, the tables function as whiteboards where the students can draw, brainstorm and develop their ideas.
The design upgrades the typical monofunctional spaces of schools – such as lunch halls, library space and hallways – so all areas are utilized efficiently throughout the day.

FACTS
Western Academy of Beijing is a prominent IB school with 1,400 students. Starting with the new prototype areas for middle school and high school, we are taking the first steps to a greater transformation of the entire campus, creating a progressing learning journey from early years to high school graduation.
