What’s a simple way to make more space available for schools? Going outdoors. With great opportunities for interdisciplinary and project-based learning, the exterior provides an abundance of flexible learning environments.

Especially in a time, where schools have to rethink practices, taking learning outdoors opens new possibilities – while complying with COVID-19 safety guidelines.

So where can we take students? Think of gardens, meadows, playgrounds, empty parking lots, forests, shelters, patios and low-trafficked neighborhood areas. In outdoor environments, children are active and empowered learners. They can play, construct, experiment and adapt their learning spaces getting hands-on with planks, boxes and nature findings.

"We need fresh air, daylight and greenery to feel balanced as human beings"

Rosan Bosch

The first reports from re-opened schools show that the students thrive socially when they are learning in outdoor environments. They are enjoying themselves and have an abundance of sensuous experiences with nature and their local surroundings.

These outdoor insights are important both now and in the future.

At Rosan Bosch Studio, we believe we should break down the boundaries of interior and exterior learning environments of schools. Taking learning outdoors makes learning fun and meaningful.
