Our winning design proposal for the new public primary school GO! Klim Op in Zandbergen in Belgium offers inspiring and playful learning landscapes to motivate students through their educational journey. The visionary development of schools in the region holds a strong focus on learner-centered environments that support different needs in learning situations.

Students are encouraged to move through the learning landscape and follow a path in the different areas. The areas function as learning houses and provide a sense of home and belonging while providing stimulating facilities that foster curiosity and play. The interior offers a 'living room' in the large plaza, a library connecting the two floors with multiple reading zones, and playful units offer differentiated learning experience for all age groups.

Inspired by the surrounding nature, the design concept captures the atmosphere of the wild forest, the 'Dender' river, and the beautiful meadows in the nearby landscape. Soft and natural materials and colors bring students closer to nature and connect the interior with the intriguing outdoor facilities.

The school is designed as a village that foster a  community feeling in the rural, natural landscape of Zandbergen.

While supporting project-based learning, the design provides learners with stimulating co-creation areas, concentration zones for a quiet, focused atmosphere and large plazas for interaction and flexible learning.

Learning can happen in every square meter at GO! Klim Up Zandbergen, where design is used as an active tool to motivate play, movement and self-directed learning.
