Learning through sharing is at the heart of our design concept for the new International Sharing School in Portugal.
Hovering over the hills of Oeiras just outside of Lisbon, the three floor IB school is where collaborative learning meets innovative design strategies supporting 21st century skills.
International Sharing School strives to foster open-minded, life-long learners through a supportive, respectful and caring environment promoting collaborative learning. Translated into three core values of caring, multiculturalism and hospitality, sharing defines the uniqueness of the IB curriculum.
Whether it is sharing recourses, spaces, knowledge or language, learning through sharing is an intrinsic part of the new school design and educational culture.
The narrative of learning through sharing is activated in the design concept for enhanced collaboration, human development and motivation. Shared spaces with comfortable sofas, libraries, curvy high-tables, bunks and mountain tops connect the learning environment and invite learners to meet, co-create and communicate. Breakout spaces support hands-on learning and concentration zones enable focused, individual work. Shapes, tactility, and colors activate the senses and imagination making the school one big playground for differentiated learning.
Curtains, foldable doors, and movable interior enable change and adaptability to new learning situations. The flexibility empowers learners to become more creative, self-directed and agile - prepared for unexpected challenges as global citizens of the future.

Hospitality
Hospitality at International Sharing School is about showing generosity and companionship to fellow learners and the surrounding community. The focus on hospitality is supported by the design that creates a sense of belonging and enable the development of social and emotional skills. Learners can freely organize and reorganize playful furniture, co-create a shared learning environment with sofas and chairs of unconventional proportions and endless options for utilization. The interior motivates play and interaction and stimulate learners’ sense of wonder while activating and nurture curiosity. The explicit references to the seaside remind learners of the surrounding nature and connect them to local resources.

I am seeing students participate much more freely now. The kids are actually able to be themselves, relaxed and learn. It shouldn’t be a stressful experience to learn, and I think it creates a lot more opportunities for us to see kids’ potential here in these environments

Multiculturalism
50+ nationalities live and learn at International Sharing School. Respect, individuality and cultural differences is an inevitable part and strength of the school culture. Sharing in a multicultural community is about being inclusive and being enrichened by differences and diversity. Mountain tops invite learners to train communications skills, debate, present ideas, be heard and listen to peers. Sharing spaces, resources and knowledge learners build a new common identity. Workshop spaces for experiments, the creations of robotics, media, sound and prototypes enable hands-on experience and collaborative learning. Interdisciplinary collaboration spaces are placed in the heart of each wing on each floor which emphasize the importance of the connections to peers, the surrounding community and the world beyond the school.

Care
Sharing is caring at International Sharing School. It means caring for one-self, caring for others and caring about the environment. Care is activated through hands-on activities in labs, group encounters that enable learners to see and to be seen in a community of mutual trust, they help and look after each other. Upholstered caves provide room for immersion, reflection and tranquility, while learners can gather around the empathy tree and close the curtains, look each other in the eyes and share knowledge. Static bikes enable focused work while learners step the pedals to support the crucial need for movement to enhance the concentration, well-being and creativity of each learner. Students learn to connect to mind and body, to trust and to become aware of their individual needs in learning situations.

From office space to learning landscape
Rosan Bosch Studio has transformed an office building into a dynamic landscape for learning at International Sharing School. The functional agility of the new environment offers multiple options for differentiated and playful learning. 350 IB students with 50+ nationalities are divided in two buildings in the Oeiras Valley.
The newly refurbished 2,500 sqm building is created for students from middle school to DP (Diploma program) and CP (Career program).
The design strategy was created in close collaboration with the Management, IB program leaders and teachers at International Sharing School.
